Hmm, it seems our issues with the Hemlock Valley Transfer Station persist.
The most recent source of irritation was the station’s lack of opening hours on the morning of Sunday, January 2nd. Great lines of visitors and homeowners were hoping to drop off their New Year’s garbage and recycling before heading down the hill, only to find the gates frustratingly closed.
Available times to manage the village’s waste and recycling is often not presented in an obvious, easy-to-see format that most locals and visitors can conveniently plan their own schedules around. Sometimes the HVTS is open on stat holidays. Sometimes it’s not. Even the assumption that everyone is in the process of leaving the hill immediately following a garbage drop-off can be received poorly by those of us that remain. Taking the refuse down to Harrison Mills when it’s snowing in the winter or when it’s sweltering in the summer, only to drive back up the mountain again is a tough pill to swallow.
Many displeasured folks on January 2 decided to drop off their rubbish at the blocked entrance anyway. Next to the sign that still advertises the station’s summer hours. Not many would think this information is worth comparing to the HVTS page on the FVRD’s website before hand.
This is just one example of the difficulties most of us have witnessed, or personally suffered.
Now is the opportunity to share your headaches with us. To know that you are not alone.
Post your comments below, adding pics as evidence of the ongoing indecency of our waste removal grievances.
And, as always, forward your reviews on to the FVRD. They are responsible for determining and posting the Hemlock Valley Transfer Station’s opening hours.

It’s okay to gripe. It’s maybe even a little healthy now and then. When acted on, it can lead to creative and satisfying fixes. But, as a former US president once said, “Complaining about a problem without posing a solution is called whining.” Remember, we’re all in this together. The HVHA and the FVRD would love to know how you think the Hemlock Valley Transfer Station could be run better too.

The attendant said that they were open on Sunday 9-2 they were not
I have tried to go there 4 times over the last 2 weeks when they are supposed to be open and they were not.
No wonder renters etc just drop the garbage off at the gate as its never open when its states on the FVRD website
The road in is an absolute joke
They fixed the top portion to get up to the bins but the bottom part near the gate is still way to steep for most vehicles other than a truck.
Going down after dumping garbage is a crap shoot as you dont know if you will slide all the way down or hit an incoming vehicle as its only single lane
The snow plowing in and around this site is atrocious
On Monday the attendant had to climb through a small gap in the snow and walk along the top of the bins to access the lids
I had to pass my garbage and recycling through the snow bank to her to dump it!!
Who is plowing this area?
As a side note, the yellow railings are too tall to get garbage over to get into the dumpster
Who ever designed this station probably has never seen it or used it, if they have, they should be fired, absolute gong show.

In my view we need more accessibility to the garbage dump. The limited days and hours are not adequate. Also just getting through the potholes and up the hill is a real challenge without a four-wheel-drive.
Homeowners should have a key to the gate
